The Healing Power Of Massage: Improving well-being over the ages

Massage may be the oldest and simplest form of medical care. More importantly, His a universal instinct. We have all suffered from minor injuries at some point in our lives. Our first reaction after some pain or discomfort is to rub or hold the affected area to ease the pain and discomfort. Everything from a bump on the head to a stomachache to a stubbed toe receives a gentle pat. Early man had similar instincts and soon learned that while rubbing painful areas of the body, certain plants could be applied to help diminish the pain and promote healing. This basic technique has been developed through the millennia into the system of massage we know today.

Weight Management In America

Do you know how many calories you ate for breakfast? Grams of carbohydrate and fat? Chances are, you have an idea if you’re the typical American who watches the scale fluctuate almost as uncontrollably as the Dow Jones Industrial Average. For nearly half a century, weight control has captured the attention of Americans. Diet books consistently rank on bestseller lists; women’s magazine editors agree their publications wouldn’t sell as well without covers touting the latest weight loss scheme; diet doctors gain fame as their patients lose weight (and even as their patients regain ost weight); patrons flock to spas in search of answers to help them eat well, get active and stay slim. Yet that which we seek remains elusive. Americans appear to be getting only fatter...

Touching the human soul across all boundaries

Music melts all the separate parts of our bodies together. —Anais Nin
Music has touched the human soul across all boundaries of time and space. Indeed, the healing power of music has been documented for thousands of years. An account involving two of the legendary kings of Israel is thought to have been written during the reign of Solomon. “And whenever the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand; so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.” Saul’s experience is echoed in our daily lives, leading William Congreve to observe, “Music has charms to soothe a savage breast.” At one point or another, everyone has turned to music to set a mood, raise the spirits, or sooth the mind. Whether you crank the car stereo to your favorite station to ready yourself for the rush hour traffic or strap on your Walkman or iPod before you set out for your morning run, or lull yourself to sleep at night as you relax with a mellow CD, one thing is clear: Music is not only entertainment, music is medicine for the body and soul.

Skin care is the fastest growing segment within the category of cosmetics today. And yet, just ten years ago, if you asked a customer what skin care products she was using, the reply would include which shade of lipstick she had on and maybe the brand or shade of foundation. The same question today would probably evoke some confusion because there is a very good chance that today’s consumer has a variety of “treatment” products she is using to improve her skin. She has evolved from just covering up to consciously “treating” the condition. During the last decade, spas have proliferated and flourished, dermatology and plastic surgery has become available to everyone, not just the rich and famous, and stores dedicated to cosmetics, such as Sephora have ecome a way of life. All of these venues, as well as the traditional department store cosmetic departments are selling skin care in a significant way.

The Healing Power Of Tea: The tiny leaves that have brought healing to thousands throughout the ages

Tea is one of the oldest beverages in the world. Though no one can be certain where and when tea was first brewed, stories about its origins seem to involve equal parts myth and reality. One legend had its origin in ancient China over 5,000 years ago. According to the story, Shen Nung, an early emperor was a skilled ruler, creative scientist, and patron of the arts. His far-sighted edicts required, among other things, that all drinking water be boiled as a hygienic precaution. One summer day while visiting a distant region, he and the court stopped to rest in the shade of a wild tea shrub. In accordance with his ruling, the servants began to boil water for the court to drink. Suddenly, a breeze blew a few leaves from the shrub into the pot and the water was infused with a delicious and refreshing flavor. He experimented further and found it to have medicinal properties as well. He urged the Chinese people to cultivate the plant for the benefit of the entire nation. And so, according to legend, tea was created.

The use of incense is as old as recorded civilization. Its history is an incredible journey into the depths of time and the evolution of humankind. A tradition that dates back thousands of years, in practically all of earth’s civilizations, it has been used to accompany prayer, worship the Gods, purify the air, release negative vibrations, induce self-awareness, and to uplift the emotional state.

Q&A with Ann Thariani, co-founder of Gilden Tree Gilden Tree is a small business in Omaha, Nebraska, that began when Ann Thariani fell in love. While attending college, she fell in love with Kumy, now her husband, who moved back home to Pakistan. After three years apart, she followed him to his land and the two were married. It is there that she discovered a local product, a funny looking, terra cotta, pumice stone called the Footscrubber, and Ann fell in love again. When they decided to move back to the United States, she and Kumy wanted to start a business together, so they started importing the Footscrubber—a unique product for the American market.

BY CHARLES HALL

Success at retailing is one of the most frequent “lost opportunities” in spas today. A reasonable target for most spas is 30–35% of total revenues done in retail. However, most spas fall drastically short of this target. To succeed at retail, certain basic principles must be followed. Remember, consumers want to buy products, but you have to make it a pleasurable and rewarding experience for them.

Sadly, most companies and organizations in our industry have been laggards in creating an environment and a way of thinking that can lead to better business practices and performance, through sustainable, transparent and responsible business strategies.

March 2004 Master Guide The staff of the Healing Arts Guide has come together from a variety of publishing and wellness industry backgrounds. However, our mission is one and the same: to help you grow your business. Our publication has been uniquely constructed with input from both spa and wellness owners and manufacturers. Together, we have created a user-friendly guide that is divided into categories representing how spa and wellness facilities actually operate (i.e. Consulting, Fitness, Body Therapies, Skin Care, Nail Care, Hair Care, Spa Desk, Operations, and Retail). Though not every issue will feature all nine, the categories will always follow the editorial well and the companies in each category will be listed in alphabetical order.

A glass of red wine a day keeps the doctor away
The medical profession has recognized the healthful and nutritive properties of wine for thousands of years. Hippocrates recommended specific wines to purge fever, disinfect and dress wounds, as diuretics, or for nutritional supplements, around 450 B.C. Most of the pathogens that threaten humans are inhibited or killed ff by the acids and alcohols in wine. Because of this, wine was onsidered to be a safer drink than much of the available water up ntil the 18th century.

The Merging of Natural, Organic and Luxury Personal Care
The natural personal care sector is dynamic and diverse and experienced growth of 15% in 2005, while the overall U.S. cosmetics and toiletries market grew by only 3.5%. While that overall number is respectable, manufacturers and retailers are looking to capitalize on the growth of natural, organic and eco products to increase their sales. The more than 2,000 new natural or organic personal care products that were launched in 2006 (up from nearly 800 in 2005) appears to validate that intent. Research from The Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) found that more than half of all consumers indicated they want personal care products containing natural or premium ingredients and 44% are seeking organic ingredients. Understanding the specific opportunities by category, gender, and psychographic target is key.

The breath is the principal power needed in healing. The author of Genesis understood something that the yogis have been teaching since early times: that there is a difference between the air we breathe and the life giving principle contained within it.
