Tea is one of the oldest beverages in the world. Though no one can be certain where and when tea was first brewed, stories about its origins seem to involve equal parts myth and reality. One legend had its origin in ancient China over 5,000 years ago. According to the story, Shen Nung, an early emperor was a skilled ruler, creative scientist, and patron of the arts. His far-sighted edicts required, among other things, that all drinking water be boiled as a hygienic precaution. One summer day while visiting a distant region, he and the court stopped to rest in the shade of a wild tea shrub. In accordance with his ruling, the servants began to boil water for the court to drink. Suddenly, a breeze blew a few leaves from the shrub into the pot and the water was infused with a delicious and refreshing flavor. He experimented further and found it to have medicinal properties as well. He urged the Chinese people to cultivate the plant for the benefit of the entire nation. And so, according to legend, tea was created.
